Learning Disability Network London (formerly the Westminster Society) would like to invite you to the first of our Spotlight on events: a series of talks to shed light and raise awareness about important issues related to learning disabilities.
The first will take place on:

The topic is the abuse of people with learning disabilities: what’s happening and what can we do about it?
We will focus on the injustice of people with learning disabilities still being locked up in assessment and treatment units and how we can change this.
We have a fantastic line up of speakers for you:
• Alexis Quinn, who is autistic, was wrongly locked in an assessment and treatment unit for three years. In her book Unbroken she wrote about her experience and how she escaped.
• Sara Ryan is the mother of Connor Sparrowhawk. Her book Justice for Laughing Boy is about her son’s tragic and preventable death in an NHS hospital. She is a professor of social care and an expert in learning disabilities.
• George Julian is an award-winning freelance journalist who specialises in investigations and inquests into the deaths of people with learning disabilities and autism.
• Amanda Topps is a consultant, who has developed policy for local government and charities that promotes equality for people with learning disabilities. Amanda has managed Learning Disability Partnership Boards and specialises in co-production. She is currently working on the Small Supports Programme, enabling people with learning disabilities to live successfully in their communities.
They will tell their own stories and give their expert opinions on the subject and open the floor to questions and debate. Followed by a drink and an opportunity for network and to meet the speakers.
Cost: a donation of your choice (we politely suggest £5.) But we appreciate that some people are struggling with the cost-of-living crisis and may need to pay less than this.
