A Fair Share of the Pie: Investigating equity in access to social care for people with learning disabilities

Free online webinar for practitioners, researchers, policy makers, supporters

Time: September 30th 2020 14:00 - 16:00

We are a group of researchers based in three universities with an interest in increasing equity in access to social care for people with learning disabilities

We share concerns with many others, that everyone gets a fair share of the social care ‘pie’ in line with their needs for support, but there is very little research evidence about how this works in practice. This webinar aims to explore the idea of fairness or ‘equity’ in the sharing out of social care resources for people with learning disabilities. We will discuss how we can investigate this further with research co-produced in collaboration with service users, caregivers and service providers. This issue has come to the fore in the context of austerity measures limiting social care provision, and the very uncertain future for social care in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The webinar will include:

- An introduction to ideas about equity in social care for people with learning disabilities

  • An interview with Professor Chris Hatton, a leading expert in the field.
  • A summary of findings from our small project that has explored the available evidence and started to engage people with learning disabilities in thinking about this question
  • A chance to express your views and experiences about this and hear from other participants.
